Researchers in Australia have developed a sports bra that automatically tightens when it senses breast movement, offering customized support that could reduce back pain and other health problems.

“Unfortunately, the most supportive sports bras tend to be the most uncomfortable to wear,” said University of Wollongong professor Julie Steele, director of Breast Research Australia (yes, Steele said BRA’s research has found that 85% of women “are wearing bras that do not fit or support their breasts correctly.” She said lack of proper breast support can cause long-term neck and back pain as well as numbness in the fingers from compression of nerves on the shoulders.

In a news release, Steele and her colleagues refer to their creation as “the world’s first bionic bra,” although that’s something of a misnomer. “Bionic” typically refers to body parts that have been enhanced by electromechanical components, but this bra prototype is made from “smart” yarn containing sensors that detect breast motion.

Background: Although the most supportive sports bras can control breast motion and associated breast pain, they are frequently deemed uncomfortable to wear and, as a result, many women report exercise bra discomfort. Given that exercise bra discomfort is associated with decreased levels of physical activity, there is a pertinent need to develop innovative solutions to address this problem.

Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the use of electromaterial sensors and artificial muscle technology to create a bra that was capable of detecting increases in breast motion and then responding with increased breast support to enhance active living.

Methods: The research involved two phases: (i) evaluating sensors suitable for monitoring and providing feedback on changes in the amplitude and frequency of breast motion, and (ii) evaluating an actuator capable of changing breast support provided by a bra during activity.

Results: When assessed in isolation, the developed technologies were capable of sensing breast motion and actuating to provide some additional breast support.

Conclusions: The challenge now lies in integrating both technologies into a functional sports bra prototype, and assessing this prototype in a controlled biomechanical analysis to provide a breast support solution that will enable women to enjoy active living in comfort resulting in a high tech bra that responds to your physical needs.

A team of Australian scientists has done just that – they are designing a comfortable, high-tech “Bionic Bra” that provides the right amount of breast support, when you need it.

The Bionic Bra is a high-tech bra that adjusts to breast movement to provide the perfect amount of support. The bra was developed in response to studies that show that around one in five women avoid exercise because of breast-related issues such as pain, embarrassment about bouncing breasts and not being able to find a well-fitting sports bra. This effectively means 20% of women miss out on the health benefits of physical activity due to breast-related issues and concerns.

The Bionic Bra is integrated with high-tech customized fibers and sensing materials that detect when a women’s breasts move more or move faster, and adjust their support accordingly.

The bra is also equipped with so-called ‘artificial muscles’ that receive messages from sensors, instructing the bra to contract to provide added breast support.

The idea is that the bra could offer firm support while its wearer is walking or running and then relax to a more comfortable fit when she’s sitting still.

I am always on the lookout for ways to improve my drawing skills. I do this by hunting around the Internet to see if I can find new tutorials. Yesterday I stumbled across a cool pencil drawing site that I think is going to make a HUGE difference, especially if you want to draw realistically.

It is a pencil drawing course that specializes in taking beginners and teaching them how to draw in a realistic style. The course itself is online video, so you can access it from anywhere in the world – the videos worked perfectly on my tablet and phone.

Each class is two hours long so you can even draw with which watching the video, nothing is left to the imagination. The course starts off by showing you all the equipment you need and the basic strokes. Even in this video I picked up a cool tip for erasing.

What I like is that each lesson builds on the previous so you are never thrown into the deep. Each class has it’s own concept or technique that you need to master, for example, in the second class you learn how to spot the different tonal values. In this class Nolan (the instructor) uses different styrofoam objects to show you the light affects the tonal values. The way he explains it makes it so easy to understand, like theory being explained in a practical way.

With each class you get a downloadable template which you can print out and use that to transfer to your drawing paper. You then also get a high quality photo of the reference and the final drawing. They are laid out in the pdf in such a way that when you print it out, each are exactly the same size. This makes it easy to judge sizes while drawing.

In each class you complete a drawing project. Like in the second class you draw a realistic spoon. At the beginning of the class I though it was going to be difficult, but after watching the explanations at the start of the class and the practical demo, it turned out to be quite easy.

The next four lessons are also still life drawings. There is an onion and garlic still life, transparent wine glass, rose and an apple drawing. In each of these you learn all about creating texture and depth in your drawings as well as drawing negatively and how to draw reflective objects.

From there you start drawing portraits. Nolan shows you how to draw all the major features like the eyes and mouth. What I liked was that he shows you what to look out for with each one. Once you have completed say the ear class, you will be able to draw any ear and not just the one from the class itself.

What really makes this course stand out from the rest is that it goes much deeper than any of the other courses I have seen. There are even classes on how to draw material textures and hands.

I am still busy with the course myself – it’s massive (there is over 32 hours worth of video in this course), but I know that my drawings are going to move up a few levels when I’m done.
